Scope Of Work
Originally constructed in 1981, San Francisco International Airport’s Boarding Area “E” consists of ten gates for United Airlines fliers. Recognizing a need to update its facilities not only to cater to modern fliers’ needs but also sustainability efforts, the renovation of Boarding Area “E” is part of a capital program to renovate SFO’s Terminal 3 East (T3E). Open to the public in January 2014, the new boarding area features abundant natural lighting, luxury guest amenities (including 5-star restrooms with private dressing areas, private nursing rooms for mothers and a yoga room), public art installations, unique local dining options and a mindful design that was built to achieve LEED Gold certification.
Before it could become the sophisticated space it is today, the original boarding area needed to be demolished. J.J. Albanese performed this duty by selectively demoing the structural steel deck, columns, roof, penthouses and slab on grade, all while protecting and salvaging the second level deck and SOG for future structural upgrades.
In addition to the demolition services, JJA’s Sawcutting and Core Drilling division worked hand-in-hand with the demolition crew to complete this challenging project. JJA’s capabilities and ingenuity were put on display as the team sawcut and core drilled the roof in sections in order to dismantle the building safely and efficiently with a crane.
