Scope Of Work
Founded in 1935, SFMOMA was the first museum on the West Coast devoted solely to 20th-century art. Its collections include more than 29,000 paintings, sculptures, photographs, architectural pieces, design and media arts. Roughly 650,000 people visited the museum a year when it was open; after the expansion is complete, SFMOMA anticipates up to one million visitors annually.
In an effort to support the continuing development of SFMOMA’s collections, programs and audience, this 200,000-square-foot expansion was designed to supplement the museum’s original 225,000-square-foot building. The new expansion will feature 100,000 square feet of additional gallery and public space as well as 85,000 square feet of support space, which includes conservation facilities and an expanded library. Design plans also include a large vertical garden on the third floor and a free ground-floor gallery facing Howard Street to showcase artwork to passersby. The building is on track to achieve LEED Gold certification with a 15 percent reduction in energy costs, a 30 percent reduction in water usage and a 20 percent reduction in wastewater generation.
